# How to avoid desk rejection: what editors check before peer review

> Why papers are desk-rejected before peer review (scope, contribution, methods, references, presentation) and a pre-submission routine that catches each one.

A desk rejection is the editor’s decision not to send a paper to reviewers at all. It usually comes within days and rarely explains much. Most reasons are visible on a first read, which means they can be caught before you submit.

## Why editors desk-reject

- Out of scope: the paper does not fit what the journal publishes, or speaks to a different audience.
- No clear contribution: the abstract and introduction do not say what is new, or the novelty is already published.
- Weak methods or evidence: missing comparisons, small or unexplained samples, claims beyond the data.
- Reference problems: thin engagement with recent work, references that cannot be found, or retracted papers cited.
- Presentation: the journal’s format, length or anonymisation rules are ignored, or the writing obscures the argument.

## A pre-submission routine

1. **Check fit.** Read the aims and scope, and three recent papers on a similar topic in the journal. If none would cite you, reconsider the venue.
2. **State the contribution.** Make the first paragraph of the introduction say what is new and why it matters, in plain words.
3. **Search for the closest work.** Make sure the paper an editor would think of first is cited and discussed.
4. **Get a reviewer’s read.** Ask a colleague, or use an AI peer review, for the weaknesses a reviewer would raise.
5. **Verify every reference.** Look each one up; remove or correct anything that cannot be found, and never cite a retracted paper as support.
6. **Follow the template.** Length, structure, anonymisation and declarations, exactly as the journal asks.

## Questions

### How common is desk rejection?

It varies widely by journal; selective journals desk-reject a large share of submissions. The editor’s note is often brief, so checking first is cheaper than waiting.

### Can I resubmit after a desk rejection?

To the same journal, only if the editor invites it. Usually you revise and submit elsewhere, after fixing what likely caused the rejection.

### Does an AI review guarantee acceptance?

No. It helps you catch common, checkable problems; fit and significance remain the editor’s judgement.
